Endicott College offers a unique opportunity for enlisted Coast Guard members to attend college-level courses while stationed on a cutter, with credits transferrable to accredited colleges and universities. This past summer, the Professor at Sea Program welcomed its first woman instructor, Teina Lucas, PsyD, from Honolulu, Hawaii.

Lucas most recently facilitated intake and crisis management for McLean Hospital’s Central Evaluation Center. Her previous experience includes teaching psychology and childhood development courses at the Van Loan School. On board the Cutter, she taught Critical Reading and Writing and General Psychology during July and August of this year.

Students in the English course learned the fundamentals of critical reading and writing and how to develop and defend positions on issues, incorporate and explain evidence to support those positions, and express their ideas in clearly written essays. The Psychology class covered understanding human behavior including the brain and nervous system, sensation and perception, motivation, learning, developmental issues, personality theories, abnormal behavior, psychotherapy, and social psychology.

“Endicott College and the Van Loan School are committed to making education accessible,” said Laura Douglass, Ph.D., Dean of Professional Studies. The Professor at Sea program is an opportunity to bring education to bright, well prepared students who have dedicated themselves to serving our country.”

The Coast Guard is committed to education, despite recent budget cuts to its tuition assistance program. Endicott’s Van Loan School continues to partner with them to provide cost-effective quality education at sea.

“This is a program that requires the dedication of everyone: faculty, administration, the Education Service Officers in the Coast Guard and Captains who believe in education as a sincere part of their mission,” said Douglass.

The next Professor at Sea program dates are yet to be determined but the Van Loan School offers year-round programs on military bases and online, with the goal of helping military personnel earn a degree wherever they serve.
