Craig Frazier Exhibit at Endicott College
Endicott College is pleased to announce the exhibition of the Award Winning Graphic Designer, Craig Frazier, in the Heftler Visiting Artist Gallery, Manninen Center for the Arts, Endicott College, 376 Hale Street, Beverly from Monday, March 30 through Wednesday, June 10, 2015. Gallery hours are: Monday – Thursday, 9:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m., Friday: 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. From May 17 – June 10hours are: Monday – Friday 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Closed on April 20, and May 25.
Craig Frazier: Drawing It Out is a solo exhibit curated by the artist, consisting of prints, digital prints, cut amberliths, sketches from the past 15 years, sketch books, as well as a running video of his work. Mr. Frazier will be giving a lecture/presentation in the Rose Performance Hall on Wednesday, April 1 at 6:00 p.m. with a reception to follow at 7:00 p.m. Please join us as we welcome Craig Frazier at Endicott College. When asked about his solo exhibit, Frazier states, “I am a designer and an illustrator. Both jobs require sketching. It’s the necessary work behind the work. It’s rough, it’s hasty, it’s fuzzy—and it’s not necessarily trustworthy. For every illustration or design there is a trail of sketches, some good and some not so good, but there is always at least one that is the tipping point for the finished illustration. This exhibition is about those sketches and that analog process. I had two goals in curating this exhibition. First, was to find sketches that were worth reproducing—sketches that I found interesting, surprising, and most of all, said the most with the fewest marks. The second was to discover some common threads between the two sketching camps—regardless of time periods.”
Over the course of his 36-year career as a designer and illustrator, Craig Frazier has developed one of the most recognized illustration styles in the world. Signature to his work is its graphic simplicity and razor-sharp wit. With only the most essential elements, Frazier embeds a story in every piece inviting the audience to step inside.
In a time when technology is rapidly reshaping design, Frazier holds firmly to his belief that relevant ideas are made with paper and pen. His lifelong love of drawing is put to service in his job of making work that is both beautiful and has something to say. For every published Frazier illustration, there lies a trove of thumbnail sketches describing a search for the clearest message. Frazier claims that the DNA of a good illustration lies in the sketches—that the hardest work to be done is always at the very beginning.
Frazier’s work surprises us with juxtaposition, intrigues us with double-entendre, delights us with its palette and most of all—connects us to a profound sense of wonder and possibility. Commissioned to express disparate subjects from “risk management”’ to “breast cancer”—Frazier consistently makes the complicated accessible and the mundane entertaining.
Craig Frazier is a frequent contributor to the New York Times, Time Magazine, Fortune, Bloomberg Business Week, Harvard Business Review and The Wall Street Journal among other publications. His corporate clients include Adobe, American Express, Boeing, Chevrolet, Deloitte, MasterCard, Navigant, United Airlines and the U.S. Postal Service. Craig has created seven postage stamps including the 2006 Love stamp and the 2010/11 commemorative Scouting stamps. He is also the author and illustrator of several children’s books.
