Before launching a transformative career in athletic leadership, Todd Vesely began as a collegiate coach, training nine NJCAA All-Americans and guiding a team to a third-place national finish. His early success laid the foundation for a dynamic tenure at Permian High School, where he spent 23 years shaping both athletic and academic excellence.
Initially serving as a boy’s gymnastics and girls’ cross-country coach, Vesely quickly distinguished himself as a passionate educator, teaching Anatomy and Physiology with the same energy he brought to the gym. It was not uncommon to enter his classroom during a dissection lab to find him on top of the lab tables “coaching” his students through the process. This enthusiasm prompted his being elected “Master Teacher of the Year” as well as three Awards for Excellence in Teaching. Adding to his coaching, he became a campus coordinator, setting the stage for broader administrative leadership.
Vesely’s coaching accolades are extraordinary: 5 State titles, 4 National titles, 25 individual State Champions, and multiple State and National scoring records. He was twice named National Coach of the Year, four times State Coach of the Year, and 12 times Regional Coach of the Year. He added a groundbreaking achievement when he shattered a long-standing glass ceiling, becoming the first gymnastics coach in Texas to be appointed as a District Athletic Director and then Executive Director of Athletics.
After 34 years in Odessa, Vesely broadened the scope of his influence by serving Fort Worth ISD for five years as Executive Director of Athletics. In this role, he elevated district-wide athletic programming, championed student-centered initiatives, and represented Texas on the state and national stage. His leadership within the Texas High School Athletic Directors Association includes service as Awards Committee Chair, Regional Director, presenter, panelist, and facilitator, reinforcing his position as a credible and influential voice in athletic administration.
Beyond district leadership, Vesely has held executive roles in multiple organizations: Executive Director, President, and Vice President of the Texas High School Gymnastics Coaches Association; President and Vice President of the National High School Gymnastics Coaches Association; Board Member for USA Gymnastics; and Regional Director for the Texas Gymnastics Judges Association.
His commitment to service extends to the High School Broyles Award, Fort Worth Sports Commission, External Advisory Board of Endicott College, College Gridiron Showcase, and the Optimists of Fort Worth. A sought-after speaker and educator, Vesely has delivered TEDx talks, contributed to national conversations on athletic leadership, and teaches in the master’s program at Endicott College.
Todd Vesely’s legacy is one of visionary leadership, educational excellence, and unwavering dedication to student-athletes. His contributions have earned him induction into the Hall of Honor of both the Texas High School Gymnastics Coaches Association and the Gymnastics Association of Texas. Most recently, he was honored with induction into the Texas High School Athletic Directors Association Hall of Honor, a fitting tribute to a career defined by innovation, and impact.
