All events are free and open to the public. In the work of the New York City Modernist painter Herman Trunk (1894-1963) the still life motif reveals itself to be a vehicle for Trunk to express aspects of his self-identity during the 1920s and 1930s, when these works were made. At that time, his abstracted yet still representational style was popular, thus he participated in exhibitions at the Art Institute of Chicago, Arts Students League, National Academy of Design, the Venice Biennale, and the Whitney Museum, participating along with many of the renowned artists of his time, including Edward Hopper and Arthur Dove. Furthermore, he had regular representation with the Dudensing Galleries. The exhibit at Endicott includes a variety of his still life paintings providing viewers with a glimpse into how, during the Early Modern period (c. 1870s-1940), Trunk's unceasing use of the still life as subject reveals the artist's Catholicism and sense of himself as a Modernist experimenter. Curated by Dr. Dena Gilby, Professor of Art History at Endicott College, Herman Trunk and the Modernist Still Life has been made possible through the generosity of the Herman Trunk Foundation and Jane Kirkeby, lenders to the exhibition, and is a companion exhibit to Herman Trunk: Catholic Modernist, curated by Dr. Cynthia Fowler on view at Emmanuel College September 8 through October 22, 2009. The School of Visual and Performing Arts at Endicott College offers the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, giving students the opportunity to study Creative Arts Therapy, Graphic Design, Photography, and Studio Art; and the Bachelor of Science degree in Interior Design with an option for a concentration is Sustainable Design.
