Creative Arts Therapy

Mark Towner, MFA, Program Coordinator, Dean and Associate Professor
Linda Klein, MFA, ATR, Associate Professor, Creative Arts Therapy

Creative Arts Therapy is a four-year, pre-professional degree integrating three areas of study: studio art, psychology, and creative arts therapy. Primarily based on the visual arts, students may augment their courses with opportunities in drama, music, and poetry. Each student enters at his or her own level of artistic development, and, through a proven year of foundation courses, grows increasingly comfortable working in a variety of media. Over the course of study, each student is encouraged to discover his or her own treasury of personal creative resources, and in turn, share therapeutic properties with others.

Although alumni have proven to be successful in securing meaningful positions in relevant fields, becoming a registered Art Therapist (ATR) is dependent upon completion of an appropriate graduate education and post-graduate supervised experience. Board Certification (ATR-BC) is granted to Registered Art Therapists who pass a written examination, and requires continuing education.

Creative Arts Therapy students at Endicott College are required to undertake three internships during their course of study at Endicott College. The first two internships take place during the January intercession of the first and second year, and the final internship is a full semester long and normally occurs during fall of the fourth year. Recent Creative Arts Therapy students have completed Internships at; Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Maine General Medical Center, National Institute of Mental Health, Saint Francis House, Stepping Stones Adult Treatment Center, Express Yourself, Inc., The Children's Connection, Shriners Hospital and Ronald McDonald House.

Senior Thesis projects by Creative Arts Therapy students have included investigations into archetypes and creativity, art therapy for abuse victims, spirituality and therapy, and teenage substance addiction and art therapy.
