Endicott Scholars Honors Program

The Endicott Scholars program is an interdisciplinary honors curriculum that seeks to give Endicott's most ambitious students an opportunity to study topics in depth and from a variety of disciplinary perspectives. The program is very competitive and only a small number of students are selected to join each year. The highest academic standards are expected of Endicott Scholars, including maintenance of a 3.5 cumulative G.P.A. every semester. Current Endicott Scholars describe the program as both intellectually demanding and rewarding.

As participants in the Endicott Scholars program, students:

  • Develop the habit of intellectual curiosity
  • Understand the concepts of "culture" and "theory" from a variety of academic perspectives
  • Identify ways of thinking and knowing within academic and professional disciplines
  • Comprehend challenging readings in primary and secondary sources
  • Write academic papers that are intellectually sound and stylistically proficient
  • Serve as models of intellectual seriousness and courage
  • Assume leadership roles in and out of class

Sarah Viafora, Sophomore, Communication

Endicott College Sophomore Sara ViaforaMy name is Sarah Viafora and I am a Communication major here at Endicott College. I was accepted into the Endicott Scholars Program in 2009 and took my second honors seminar-The Culture of Heroism--this spring with Professor Richard Nastasi.

The Culture of Heroism asked us to define, redefine, and explore the stated definitions of what a hero is, whether in western or other cultures.  By reading books like Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and The Natural, the class was able to examine what a hero is.  We were able to compare male and female heroes by analyzing the grade-school novel Coraline.  Greek literature was also covered as the classic play Antigone and the novel Cassandra were discussed using the concepts of the female hero and the heroine.

By viewing film adaptations of many of the course readings, we were also able to critique and criticize the representations of heroes created by the film industry.  This class not only combined my two favorite forms of entertainment-literature and film--but it taught me to be a more respectful and confident hero in the world of business and academia.
