SAADAWI, Nawal el

Birth date: 1931
Birthplace: Kafr Tahla, Egypt
Education: Educated at the University of Cairo, Cairo, Egypt.
Professional Career: Physician and writer, Ms. Saadawi was director of health education from 1958-72 under the Ministry of Health, Cairo. She has served on United Nations Economic Commissions for Africa, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, West Asia, and is the co-founder of African Women's Association for Research and Development, founded in 1977. While her early writings are largely autobiographical, Saadawi's novels are generally concerned with the plight of women in Egypt and of oppressed people everywhere.
