PROCHAZKOVA, Iva

Birth date: 1953
Birthplace: Olomouc, Czechoslovakia
Education: Studied at the Secondary School of Jan Neruda in Prague.
Professional Career: A free-lance writer who won the Juvenile Literature Prize from the German Academy for Children's and Juvenile Literature in 1989.

QUINN, Zdenka (Hodbodova)

Birth date: 1942
Birthplace: Dobrovice, Czechoslovakia
Education: Studied at Antonin Zapotocky University of Economics from 1963-1968.
Professional Career: Traveled to the U.S. in 1968 where she met and married John Paul Quinn. Translator as well as writer of Czech novels.

  • The Water Sprite of the Golden Town (from Bohemian folktales by Karel Erben and Bozena Nemcova) Translator and adapter with husband, John Paul Quinn, Macrae, 1971.

 

SHYER, Marlene Fanta

Birth date:
Birthplace: Czechoslovakia
Education: Obtained a B.S. in Religion from the University of Bridgeport.
Professional Career: Was an elementary school teacher in Portchester, NY from 1955-57. Won the Children's Book fo the Year Award from Child Study Association of America in 1969. She also writes television scripts and submits short stories to periodicals such as Good Housekeeping and Ladies Home Journal.

SKVORECKA, Zdena Salivarova

Birthplace: Prague, Czechoslovakia
Education: Studied at the Prague Film School.
Professional Career: Acted in several films in the late 1960's before moving to Toronto in 1969. Opened her own publishing house, 68 Publishers, and was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Toronto and the Czech Order of the White Lion for her literary contributions.

Education: Ph.D., Charles University, Prague
Professional Career: She has taught at the University of Cologne and University of Marburg in West Germany; Harvard University; and the University of Virginia, Charlottesville. She is presently Professor of Slavic Languages and Literatures at Indiana University, Bloomington.
