Professional Career: Garcia is a journalist and author. She was a reporter and
researcher for Time from 1983-85 and a correspondent from
1985-90. She was also bureau chief in Miami, FL from 1987-88. Garcia was
the National Book Award finalist for the National Book Foundation in
1992 for Dreaming in Cuban and received the Hodder fellowship
from Princeton University in 1992-93 and the Cintas fellowship from
1992-93. She also won the Whiting Writers Award in 1996.
