AHEARN, Catherine

Birthplace: Ottawa, Ontario
Education:  Attended University of Aix-en-Provence, 1968-69; McGill University, B. A. (with honors), 1970; University of Ottawa, M. A., 1971, Ph.D., 1979 (French Literature).
Professional Career:  Ahearn worked as a professor and writer until 1981 where she became the president of Poasis Properties Ltd. in Ottawa, Ontario. She was a professor at the University of Ottawa in summer 1975 and translating foreign poetry is one of her literary interests. She was named the first Poet Laureate of Ottawa by the City of Ottawa in 1982.

BEATTIE, Jessie Louise

Birth date:  October 2, 1896
Birthplace:  Blair, Ontario
Education:  Attended Galt Collegiate Institute; special courses at University of Buffalo (now State University of New York at Buffalo), 1925-26, and University of Toronto, 1943-44.
Professional Career:  Plagued by ill health as a child, Jessie Louise Beattie began to write at age nine and published poetry at thirteen and short stories and a serial at eighteen. She has been a free-lance writer since 1944, and used to be a journalist before becoming an author of books. She has won the Hamilton Arts Council Award for Literary Excellence, for A Walk Through Yesterday, the William Arthur Deacon Arts Council Award, for A Skylark's Empty Nest, and the Canada Council grant.

Education:
Professional Career: Birdsell has received a Literary arts grant in 1979 and major arts grant in 1982, both from Manitoba Arts Council, as well as the Gerald Lampert Award from the League of Canadian Poets in 1984 and the National Magazine Award in 1984. Maclean's named Agassiz Stories one of the ten best books of 1987. She was the writer in residence at University of Waterloo in 1987.

She has won the Du Maurier Award for Poetry from Canada's National Magazine Awards in 1978, the National Magazine Award for Poetry in 1989, the Long Poem prize from the Malahat Review in 1994, and has been the recipient of Various Canada Council Awards for poetry.

She has won first prize in juvenile writing from the Canadian Authors Association in 1978, first prize in the CommCept Canadian KiddLit Competition in 1980; second prize in juvenile writing from the Canadian Authors Association in 1984, the Max and Greta Ebel Award in 1990, and the Young Adult Book Award from the Canadian Library Association in 1993.

She has won the Pratt Gold Medal and prize from Kings College, London in 1953, the Senior Artists awards from the Canada Council in 1971-72, 1976, 1978-79, and 1985-86, the President's Medal from the University of Western Ontario in 1979 for poetry, the  Litt.D. from the University of New Brunswick in 1982, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation award for poetry in 1990, the Lifetime Excellence in the Arts Award from the Saskatchewan Arts Board in 1995, and she was shortlisted for the Governor General's award for poetry in 1996.
