SHAHRAZ, Qaisra

Birth date:
Birthplace: Born in Pakistan, but grew up in England
Education: Studied English and Classical Civilization at the University of Manchester. She also received a masters degree in English and European Literature.
Professional Career: Shahraz works as a lecturer, examiner, and college inspector. She has written several plays as well as television scripts. Her show, Tuheen, was a hit on Pakistan television. She is also a contributor to several newspapers and magazines.

SHAMSIE, Kamila

Birth date: 1973
Birthplace: Karachi, Pakistan
Education: Studied at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York. She was also in the graduate program for creative writing at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
Professional Career: Shamsie was born into a literary family, with her great aunt, Attiya Hussain, her mother, Muneeza Shamsie, and her grandmother, Jahanara Habibullahs all being writers. Her first novel, In the City by the Sea, won the John Llewellyn Rhys prize and the Prime Ministers Award for literature in Pakistan in 1999.

SIDHWA, Bapsi

Birth date: 1938
Birthplace: Karachi, Pakistan
Education: Educated at home until age fifteen; attended university in the Punjab.
Professional Career: Sidhwa is a parsee and feels being a member of such a small minority group has influenced her writing. She sees things objectively and believes her novels show her inclination to write about humor, even in the context of tradgedies. She has been on the advisory committee to Prime Minister Benezir Bhutto on Women's Development and has taught at Colombia University, Rice University, and the University of Houston. She has been awarded the Sitara-i-Imtiaz, Pakistan's national honor of the arts and is currently the writer-in-residence at Mt. Holyoke College.

SHAFQUAT, Sofia

Birth date: 1959
Birthplace: Karachi, Pakistan
Education: Graduated with a B.A. from Brown University in 1980.
Professional Career: Shafquat has held several positions at literary agencies and was a free-lance writer for magazines from 1980-1985. She has also been a graphic designer and illustrator since 1980 and has contributed articles and illustrations to periodicals, including American Health.
