Information about HFHRC: We are a nonprofit organization dedicated to the eradication of poverty housing in our community. Partnering with folks of all faiths and ethnic backgrounds, funded by generous donations and aided by hundreds of volunteers, we build homes that are simple, decent and affordable places to live. Since our founding in 2000, we have constructed 54 houses and renovated two. About the Area: Phenix City is part of a tri-city community that includes Columbus and Fort Benning, GA. For those attracted to the great outdoors we offer scenic river walks along the Chatttahoochee River. There are also a number of local attractions: Fort Benning Infantry Museum (which traces the infantry from early colonial times to the present in an interactive format, Coca-Cola Space and Science Center, Civil War Naval Museum, Heritage Park and Patterson Planetarium, to name a few. About 30 miles away is Pine Mountain GA with Calloway Gardens, famous for camping, hiking trails, butterfly center and birds. Warm Springs is near that area with the Little White House of Franklin D. Roosevelt. About 35 miles away is Chewacla State Park and Tuskegee National Forest. Montgomery Al has the Shakesphere Festival for those interested in theatre. Locally, in Columbus we have the Springer Opera House Theatre. About 65 miles away is Habitat International in Americus GA and nearby is Plains GA, the home of former president Jimmy Carter. Atlanta GA and Birmingham AL are larger cities about 100+ miles away respectively. Panama City Beach is about 250 miles south. ACCOMMODATIONS You will be housed in the gymnasium of CVCC. We will provide cots and you will need to bring sleeping bags, blankets, pillows, towels, etc. There are showers in the facility. You will have access to a kitchen with microwave, etc. Snacks will be available at the facility. FOOD We will provide 15 meals for each group. Lunch will be provided at the work site. Breakfast will either be at the college, at a host church, or at the work site. Dinner will be in host churches. The first meal will be at the orientation on Sunday evening and the last meal will be at lunch on Friday. We will attempt to arrange for special meals for those who have special dietary needs.
