PERG Director Debra Richardson Smith has been appointed to
Boston Public Schools’ Dual Language Advisory Committee by departing
Superintendent Carol Johnson.
Coordinated by the BPS Office of English Language Learners (OELL), this group
will help guide the district’s efforts to open at least three new K-5/K-8
programs over the next three years. This initiative grows out of research that
shows that two-way bilingual programs are effective in closing the achievement
gaps between native English speakers and ELLs, and is beneficial for academic
performance and student engagement in grades 3-8, regardless of native language,
race or income.
