Alun Williams was born in Manchester (UK) in 1961. He exhibited his work for the first time in 1979 at the University of Manchester and in the same year left to study painting at the School of Art of the University of Wales. In 1981-82 he benefited from an overseas study grant to begin his long relationship with France as a student at the National Art School in Bourges. He finished his studies in Wales, had a solo exhibition at the Galerie Medamothi in Montpellier, and then continued studying at Blackheath School of Art in London before beginning his Masters at Goldsmiths’ College, University of London (1986-87).

For the Endicott exhibition, Williams brings together a cast of historical characters, featuring an imagined love affair between French nineteenth century sci-fi writer, Jules Verne with Edouard Manet’s favorite model, as well as religious references with representations of God and a number of Virgins…These recent works link his own appropriation of accidental paint-marks, found in the street, with representations of historical characters gathered from the history of painting.

Assistant Professor Cynthia Roberts states, “Alun Williams' new works embed history, great technical knowledge of painting, and serendipity. He uses found paint marks as stand-ins for people and personas, as he takes them on visual journeys through time and space in painted form. Williams, trained at Goldsmiths’ College in London, is a curious artist whose lusciously layered images ask the viewer to join them on this travel, giving us privy to spectacle, contradiction, and the delight of imagined or perhaps real encounters.”

Alun Williams continues his involvement in the experimental projects undertaken by Parker’s Box, Brooklyn and supports the activities of Triangle in New York and closely follows those of Triangle France in Marseille and La Vigie in Nîmes, France.
He is also a long-distance runner and member of the New York Road Runners Club and North Brooklyn Runners.
